Phelps County is Fourth Healthiest County in the State
posted by Holdrege Chamber of Commerce on 2/22/2010
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ A report examining how health is influenced by community says Cedar County is the healthiest county in the Nebraska, while Richardson County is the least healthy. The report released Wednesday by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation looked at counties in all 50 states. It ties standard measures _ general health and the rate of premature death _ with factors that play a role in those outcomes, including the unemployment rate, childhood poverty and air pollution. In Nebraska, Cedar County was followed by Wayne, Pierce, Phelps, Seward, Washington, Sarpy, Howard, York and Holt as the top 10 healthiest counties. Richardson was joined in the bottom 10 by Scotts Bluff, Thurston, Furnas, Kimball, Harlan, Knox, Gage, Dawson and Cheyenne. ___ On the Net: County health rankings: http://www.countyhealthrankings.org
Funk - A bird watcher's paradise smack in the middle of farm country
The Funk Waterfowl Protection Area (also known as the Funk Lagoon) was designated a National Recreational Trail in 2008 and is known literally throughout the world as one of the best places to observe wide varieties of aquatic birds, especially during the spring and fall migrations.
In contrast, Funk has scored a technology coup that even most Silicon Valley towns don’t have - every house has a fiber optic connection. That means that not only does each residence have high-speed Internet capabilities, but with thousands of times the transmission capacity of copper wire, they are “future-proofed” for potential data and video applications, from interactive content and telecommuting to audio and video on demand.
The people and the sense of community make Funk a charming, desirable place to live. Only you can decide if it is just the place for you.
